The Dairy Business Association, representing hundreds of family farms from across Wisconsin, encourages families today to celebrate "Family Day - A Day to Eat Dinner with Your Children™". Launched by the National Center for Addiction and Substance Abuse (CASA) at Columbia University, this national initiative is designed to remind parents that dinners make a difference.
"Today, just like any other day, Wisconsin's dairy farm families will be producing food for millions of families across the globe," says Laurie Fischer, DBA Executive Director. "And those farm families understand the value and importance of enjoying that food at the dinner table with family members. That's why we support initiatives like this that bring the family closer together, especially when it's around a great meal."
The Importance of Family Dinners VI, a new CASA report, found that compared to teens who have frequent family dinners (five to seven per week), those who have infrequent family dinners (fewer than three per week) are more than twice as likely to say that they expect to try drugs in the future.
Collectively, Wisconsin farm families produce nearly seven million gallons of milk each day that gets bottled or turned into cheese, ice cream, yogurt and other dairy products that provide important nutrition to families.
"Dairy producers understand the critically important role they play in providing food for a growing world population," says Fischer. "At the same time, they produce that food responsibly, taking care to treat animals, the land and surrounding environment with the utmost care."
