As National 4-H Week begins this weekend, counties are gearing up to celebrate 4-H programs across Wisconsin. National 4-H Week events run October 3-9, 2010 and include 4-H National Youth Science Day, October 6. Many counties in Wisconsin will perform the national experiment, “4-H20,” designed to help young people learn about the impact of carbon dioxide on water quality and organisms in the environment.

The Wisconsin county 4-H programs featuring National Science Day experiments include:

•Jackson County, October 5, at the county UW-Extension office in Black River Falls

•Rock County, October 6, at McLenegan Elementary and Cunningham Elementary in Beloit

•Ozaukee County, October 5, at the Ozaukee County fairgrounds in Cedarburg

•Waukesha County, October 9, at UW-Waukesha

•Dunn County, October 6, at New Hope Lutheran Church in Downsville

Programs may be conducted in more counties; check with your county UW-Extension office for more information.

National Youth Science Day is part of the nation-wide 4-H initiative to engage one million new young people in science and engineering programs by 2013. In Wisconsin, science programming has come in the forms of robotics clubs, wind energy projects and engineering-based summer day camps. The 4-H National Youth Science Day experiment encourages young people from around the country to take a look at environmental issues through a scientific lens and think critically about solving the problem.
