Farm News: DNR Baffled On Fish Kill

State wildlife officials say they're baffled after dozens of fish turned up dead along a stretch of the Sugar River in western Dane County.

The state Department of Natural Resources has been investigating
after anglers reported floating dead fish. Most were wild brown
trout. DNR specialist Jim Amrhein says the reports came in this week
but the fish kill probably happened last week.

Previous fish kills were traced to manure runoff from farm
fields. But Amrhein tells the Wisconsin State Journal this isn't
the time of year that farmers typically apply manure.
The DNR says a likely culprit could be chemical contamination,
although no evidence has been found.

Amrhein says it's likely that far more fish died than the 50 or
so that have turned up so far.
