Farm News: Transportation Waiver Helps Fertilizer MovecommentsPosted: 10.06.2010 Fertilizer supplies showing up at the right time are critical for Wisconsin farmers - and a waiver from the U.S. Department of Transportation will hopefully keep those supplies on time! The U.S. Department of Transportation has issued a waiver creating a two-year limited hours-of-service exclusion for anhydrous ammonia shipments. Bill Oemichen, president and CEO of Cooperative Network, says the waiver's an acknowledgment that there are significant delivery constraints beyond the control of anhydrous ammonia motor carriers like agricultural supply cooperatives. Without the waiver, co-ops might not be allotted sufficient time to fill all orders, leaving farmers without product.
For each of the last three years, Cooperative Network requested and received state-level emergency declarations from Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty to increase anhydrous ammonia supplies and keep pace with peak post-harvest application periods.
Anhydrous ammonia and many other agricultural supplies are delivered on a “just-in-time” basis. When demand is high, anhydrous ammonia supplies can be tight—as was the case over the past three years. Unnecessary trucking regulations can further reduce supply, which this federal waiver addresses. “From the producer’s perspective, more time in the field in the fall reduces spring planting constraints and can result in longer growing periods and potentially higher yields. The health of our rural economies depends on the success of agriculture. This waiver will certainly help.” said Oemichen.
