Farm News: Fish Farmers Could Get Feed Relief

comments

Posted: 10.08.2010

Fish farmers hit with high feed costs in 2009 may be able to recoup some of their losses under a federal disaster relief program, but they need to act by November 15.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture – Farm Service Agency is providing $20 million to aquaculture producers, including more than $38,500 to those in Wisconsin. To qualify, they must have paid at least 25 percent more for feed in 2009 than the five-year (2003-2007) average feed cost.

Other requirements include:
  • Raising aquaculture species as part of a farming operation
  • Spending at least 25 percent of total input costs on feed
  • Compliance with conservation provisions
  • Being in operation on the application date, and using grant funds for the current aquaculture operation

Detailed information and application materials are available on the
Wisconsin Aquaculture Association's website. Complete applications with all supporting materials are due by noon on Monday, November 15, in the offices of the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection, which is administering the grant program. Email application materials to mike.bandli@wi.gov or fax them to 608-224-5110.
