Farm News: Winds Worry Farmers

The National Weather Service has already issued high wind advisories for a good chunk of Wisconsin - causing some growers with crop still standing to hope the plants can stand it!

60 mile-per-hour gusts are expected starting as soon as Monday afternoon into Tuesday afternoon.  Aaron Prestemon with Pioneer told Pam Jahnke on Monday morning that growers should keep an eye on the plants that do weather this storm.  "This is where the genetics are going to be tested," Prestemon said - explaining that it won't be just the wind impacting the crop.  "We've had some insect pressure too - and if a grower didn't plan for that in their genetic package, they might watch that corn plant tip over in these winds."

Prestemon guess-timated that well over 70 percent of all the crop is already in for growers in his area - but the winter wheat could really benefit from the rains over the weekend.  "There were a lot of wheat fields that got planted but have been laying there waiting for this rain,"  he said, "Hopefully this will help germinate that seed and get it set before the snow."

A Pioneer field representative joins Pam Jahnke and the network farm report each Monday, Wednesday and Friday through the growing season.
