Farm News: Wisconsin Scores High On Grant MoneycommentsPosted: 10.25.2010
Wisconsin is a big winner in the 2010 race to capture federal support for rural small business development, investments in infrastructure, and economic expansion according to Stan Gruszynski, USDA Rural Development State Director for Wisconsin.
Gruszynski announced the close of the 2010 fiscal year indicates Wisconsin lead the Nation in the utilization of Value Added Producer Grants, was third in funding for Guaranteed Business & Industry Program dollars, and came in fourth in the Nation in its Rural Business Enterprise Grant funding. Wisconsin also ranked in the top 15 in the Water and Waste Disposal Programs and Energy Programs, respectively.
Wisconsin received $2.25 million in funding for 14 Value Added Producer Grants, the most in the Nation in both recipients and funding for three straight years. The Guaranteed Business & Industry Program assisted 39 rural businesses with nearly $146 million; while the Rural Business Enterprise Grant funding totaled nearly $1.5 million assisting 14 applicants. Additionally, the Water and Waste Disposal Programs garnered over $69 million in 25 communities; and the Energy Programs totaled over $3 million in funds for 82 projects. Numerous other programs brought in several million dollars in additional funding.
“Overall, Wisconsin business and community programs contributed over $250 million in Fiscal Year 2010 to the sustainability of rural Wisconsin infrastructure, vital community facilities, relending programs, cooperative programs and several other business programs,” Gruszynski said. “President Obama’s goal of revitalizing and rebuilding America’s rural economy and infrastructure is happening in Wisconsin.”
Of the total $250 million in funding, $37 million was in the form of grants, providing additional support to rural businesses. The largest contributor of grants was the Water and Waste Disposal Programs with more than $24.5 million distributed to rural communities across Wisconsin. Funding was provided through regular appropriations, disaster funding, and the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.
“It is a privilege for me and Rural Development staff to have the opportunity to work with rural leaders and businesses that are focused on building a sustainable rural economy. These rural Wisconsinites are actively engaged in reassessing their assets, redefining their future, and taking advantage of the partnership afforded by USDA Rural Development,” Gruszynski pointed out. “The end result, once again, Wisconsin emerges as a national leader.”
