Farm News: Only 5 Young Farmer Applications So Far

Daphne Holterman of Rosy Lane Holsteins is worried.  Young agribusiness leaders in Wisconsin are working alone more and more these days.  They're concerned about their bottom line - and they're not putting value on networking.

That's one of the reasons why Holterman and her husband, Lloyd, were involved in the 1994 Wisconsin Jaycees Outstanding Young Farmer program.  Holterman tells Pam Jahnke that it gave them a "shot in the arm at just the right time.  We were just starting and it helped us know that we were going in the right direction.  It also gave us a great chance to meet other young growers and find out what they were doing."

That's why Holterman's concerned today.  The appllcation deadling for the 2011 Wisconsin Jaycees Outstanding Young Farmer (OYF) program is Nov. 15th - and so far, she says, they've only got five applications.

To be eligible, nominees should be aged 21 through 38 years old and derive two-thirds or more of their income from farming.   The award is based on 50 percent progress in ag career, 25 percent soil and water conservation and 25 percent contributions to community, state or nation.

But it's not just about the award - its about the friendships you form, and the exchange of experiences you share, according to Holterman.  "You can learn from growers that aren't in dairy farming.  You can learn from a wheat grower in Kansas, a shrimp producer in Louisiana - all you need to do is keep an open mind."

Anyone can submit nominations -- agri-business professionals, UW Extension staff, OYF past winners and Jaycee chapters. Nominations are requested by Nov. 15, with a completed application due Dec. 1, 2010.
“Our focus is to expand the number of candidates and the variety of commodities represented,” says Cindy Matton, OYF Awards Weekend event organizer. “The OYF program reflects all types of agriculture here in Wisconsin, and we have a diverse array of commodities and producers,” she notes.

The state event will be hosted by the Prairie du Chien Jaycees and OYF supporters in Eau Claire - January 2011.

Normally, local farmers are sponsored to the state event by local Jaycee chapters or other agricultural groups.   If you don't know who's coordinating your local Jaycess - contact Daphne and she'll get you connected.

To nominate a deserving farmer or farm couple, send their name, address, phone and e-mail  to Daphne Holterman, fax: 920-262-8981, or rosylane@gdinet.com
