Farm News: Grain Storage Only Snag In Harvest

With average fall weather returning to Wisconsin, farmers kept the combines rolling.  According to this week's crop update from the Wisconsin Ag Statistical Service - the only snag in the smooth harvesting game plan might have been finding a grain elevator with space for delivery.

Statewide, the harvest of 2010 has been setting records not only for volume of crop being delivered - but the speed that its coming in at too!  That's stressed many grain elevator locations - forcing them to adjust their daily delivery schedules just to try and spread the loads of grain coming in.  Some elevators have been alerting growers about the finer points of the contracts they've entered into.  For example, some growers that may have contracted for delivery of their crop in the later half of November may find themselves unable to delivery early because of the lack of space.  Growers are being encouraged to talk to their grain partners in advance of harvesting remaining grain - and definitely before they bring those loads in for delivery.

Corn for grain was reported at 76 percent harvested across the state, 10 percentage points above the previous week. Reports indicated that growershave saved in costs at the dryers as corn came off fields
with low moisture levels. In Dunn County, a report stated some growers were having problems with corn shelling as soon as it hit the combine.

For some, the high winds last week caused corn stalks to lodge, making harvest more challenging.

Soybean harvest was complete for many growers, with 98 percent of soybeans reported harvested.

Many reports indicated that the planting of winter wheat wrapped up the past week. The recent rain helped newly planted wheat to germinate and emerged winter wheat to green up.

Fall tillage was reported at 46 percent complete, 7 percentage points above the previous week. Reports indicated that the rain slowed fall tillage for some due to wet field conditions, while it aided others by softening the soil.

Manure hauling continued over the past week.
