Commodity prices increased for farmers for October, while cattle prices fell in Wisconsin.  During the month of October, corn in Wisconsin was an average of $4.56 per bushel, which is 58 cents over September and 84 cents over October 2009.  Nationwide, prices averaged $4.78 per bushel in mid-October, which is $1.17 above the year before.

Soybean prices gained 70 cents from last month, and $1.11 more than October of 2009.  Average price per bushel in mid-October was $10.50.  Nationally, soybeans sold for an average of $10.70, which is up $1.27 from last year.

Alfalfa hay stayed level with last month’s pricing, but was still $5 higher than the previous year.  In Wisconsin, the average price was $105 per ton.

Cattle prices declined a bit from last month’s pricing, but still are above the 2009 levels.  Wisconsin milk cows sold for $1,410 per head in mid October, which is $210 more than last year.  Steer and heifer prices went down 40 cents from last month, and beef and cull cows sold for slaughter decreased $2,30 from September, but increased $11.20 from 2009 prices.

At the national level, milk cows sold for an average of $1,330 per head, which is $90 from last year.  Steers, heifers, beef and cull dairy cows were all up from last year.
