Farm News: WI Ag Exports Escalate 37 Percent

Where in Wisconsin's economy can you find a sector with a 37 percent increase in exports this year?  

Governor Jim Doyle announced Tuesday the answer is in the agricultural exports!  Doyle said that as of the end of September, Wisconsin ag exports had increased by 37 percent over third quarter exports last year.  With over $1.71 billion worth of agricultural exports through September of this year to over 150 countries, Wisconsin saw double-digit growth in almost all of its export markets and product categories.
 
“We have worked really hard to invest in Wisconsin’s diverse farmers and producers and help them enter growing export markets, and our hard work is paying off,” Governor Doyle said. “Our expanding agricultural exports demonstrate the success of Wisconsin’s agricultural products that are known throughout the world for their high quality and innovation.  Wisconsin has the best farmers and producers in the world and together we have built a strong global presence that will continue to grow our agricultural economy and create jobs here in Wisconsin.”
 
In an interview with Pam Jahnke, WI Ag Secretary, Randy Romanski said that the sharp increase in sales to South Korea were brought about, in part, because of that countries willingness to bring U.S. beef into their borders.  Romanski said that was a major artery for Wisconsin beef.

Romanski told Jahnke that people sometimes forget - Wisconsin's international agricultural marketing strength. " Here's a good example," he said, "Wisconsin is ranked number one or two in the nation in the export of everything from canned sweet corn to ginseng to cheese. Bovine genetics and purebred cattle - as well as mixes used in the baking industry.  So that's a real good snapshot of all the great things marketed from Wisconsin that are leading to this economic benefit."
 
 
The export category that includes grains such as corn, barley and rice was the fastest growing category, gaining 118 percent to reach $316 million through September. The category for dairy, eggs and honey followed, gaining 46 percent to reach $161 million. And ingredients, sauces, yeasts and mustards drove miscellaneous food exports up by 18 percent to reach $149 million.
