Farm News: No Travel Alert For Firewood

With hunters around the state making plans for another gun-deer season, this word of caution regarding the use of firewood: Don’t move it out of areas quarantined for the emerald ash borer.  Moving a bundle might cost you a bundle.

Wisconsin’s EAB quarantine restricts the movement of firewood from 11 counties in the southeast, southwest and northeast. The quarantined counties include: Brown, Crawford, Fond du Lac, Kenosha, Milwaukee, Racine, Sheboygan, Ozaukee, Vernon, Washington and Waukesha.

Transporting firewood out of those counties could result in a penalty of a couple hundred dollars or more. Moving firewood out of some other state that’s quarantined for EAB – Illinois, Michigan, or Ohio, for example – could result in penalties in the thousands of dollars. Firewood may be moved within a contiguous quarantine area.

“Moving infested firewood has played a huge role in the rapid spread of EAB throughout the Great Lakes region and other states,” said Bob Dahl, chief regulatory officer with the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP).  “All it takes is one stick of infested firewood to move a new population of ash-killing beetles into a new area. Most of the time, people aren’t even aware that they’re doing it.”

If your hunting trip includes the use of firewood, Dahl offers the following advice:

    • Gather or purchase your firewood at or near your destination.
    • Get only as much firewood as you need for your stay; don’t leave any behind or take any home.
    • Use firewood from state-certified dealers; they’ve rendered their firewood free of any pests or diseases. There are now 32 certified dealers around the state.
    • If camping in state parks or forests, be aware that firewood cannot be brought in from more than 25 miles away
    • If camping at a private campground, call ahead to find out if they have any firewood restrictions
