Farm News: Applications Deadline For Jaycees Program Continues

Applications are slowly trickling in for the Wisconsin Jaycees Outstanding Young Farmer program according to application coordinator, Daphne Holterman.

In an interview with Pam Jahnke, Holterman says they're committed to accepting applications until December 1st - buying a few more weeks for young producers still working on their applications.  "It takes a little time to pull all the information together and formulate thoughtful answers to some of those questions," Holterman says, "But it's really rewarding when you sit down and put your accomplishments on paper."

Holterman tells Jahnke that so far she's received 6 completed applications - with about 13 more that are "in the works".  If they all get delivered, that would be a pretty good group compared to previous years.  Holterman says they're hoping for wide representation statewide from all facets of agriculture.  "Right now we're heavily represented by dairy - but we also have a hog producer too.  I'd love to have a dozen more applications before we're done!"

Candidates must get at least 2/3 of their income from farming and be between the ages of 21-38.

The 2010 Wisconsin winners - Ryan and Michelle Keller of Richland Center - will head to the National Outstanding Young Farmer Awards Congress in Louisville, Kentucky February 17-20.

For more information or applications - contact Daphne Holterman directly at 920-262-0797 or email:
