State Representative Lee Nerison (R-Westby) has been named Chair of the Assembly Committee on Agriculture for the 2011-12 legislative session, which begins on January 3, 2011.

“I am honored to represent one of the most agriculturally-diverse districts in the state – we have Amish farms, organic farms, 1,000-animal herds, and 60-cow dairy farms like mine was when I was dairying. My goal as Chair of the Agriculture Committee will be to make sure that all types of farmers and agribusinesses work together to preserve our rural way of life and grow our state’s agricultural economy. Agriculture has always been – and always will be – a cornerstone of what makes
Wisconsin great,” Nerison said.

Nerison has been a member of the Assembly Committee on Agriculture since 2005 and served as its Vice-Chair from 2005-08.

He is a former dairy farmer and has operated his family-owned farm near Westby for over 40 years.

Other committees and chairs named by Assembly Speaker-elect Jeff Fitzgerald yesterday include: Natural Resources – Rep. Scott Gunderson; Transportation – Rep. Jerry Petrowski; Rural Economic Development & Rural Affairs – Rep. Al Ott; Forestry – Rep. Jeff Mursau; Energy & Utilities – Rep. Mark Honadel; Education – Rep. Steve Kestell; Jobs, Economy and Small Business – Rep. Mary Williams.
