Farm News: WI Land Conservation Recognizes WinnerscommentsPosted: 12.01.2010
The 2010 Wisconsin Land and Water Conservation convention is coming up - and there are plenty of Wisconsin residents actively engaged in the conservation movement.
Chris Schlutt, Program Coordinator for WLWCA, tells the WI Farm Report that the annual event December 9-10 will not only recognize established conservationists - but also young voices that are already speaking up for the group. Some of those young voices will be advancing to the National Association of Conservation Districts competition in February. State winners include:
Elementary Division: Adileen Sii from Wood County Junion Division: Benjamin Metzger, Oneida County Senior Division: Leah Wickersham, Marquette County Additional winners will advance in "poster" competitions too.
The 2010 Conservation Farmer of the Year award will be presented in December to John and Dorothy Priske of Fountain Prairie Farms in Fall River. The Columbia county farmers concentrate on raising Highland beef cattle - ideal for their grazing operation. Priskes also feature organic produce - some of which they use in their bed and breakfast operation.
In the Priske's application, they explained how they transitioned from traditional crop and livestock production to more conservation minded approaches across their farm. One example of their efforts includes restoring a 61-acre prairie wetland that was drained for cultivation years earlier. |
