Smart Wisconsin consumers would be wise to pay attention to the price trends that Wisconsin farmers are living with! Ultimately – it’s a sign of what may be coming to a grocery store near you.
The latest pricing information from the Wisconsin Ag Statistical Service, for example, shows that Wisconsin beef producers are seeing their prices go up. That in turn may mean higher retail prices soon. Steer and heifer prices in Wisconsin averaged $92.50 per hundredweight (cwt.) or about 92 cents a pound for the entire live animal in mid-November. That price is up 15 cents a pound from last month and $1.56 a pound over a year ago. The average price for beef cows and cull dairy cows sold for slaughter, at $51.90 per cwt., decreased $1.10 from October but were $10.90 higher than in November 2009. Calves sold for $143.00 per cwt. in mid-November, $2.00 more Prices in Wisconsin for beef cows and cull dairy cows sold for slaughter, milk, oats, and other hay decreased from October to November. Prices for alfalfa hay remained at the same level as in October. Corn in Wisconsin sold for an average price of $4.55 per bushel in mid-November. That’s up 25 cents over October and 92 cents a bushel over the price in November 2009.
The average price for Wisconsin soybeans was $11.30 per bushel in mid-November, $1.10 more than the October price and $1.75 more than in November of last year.
Wisconsin oats averaged $1.99 per bushel in mid-November, 50 cents less than in the previous month but 20 cents more than in November 2009.
Alfalfa hay in Wisconsin sold for an average price of $105.00 per ton as of mid-November. This price was level with October but $5.00 more than in November of last year. The mid-November average price for other hay types was $70.00 per ton, $5.00 less than in October but equal to the previous November’s price.
