The state Department of Natural Resources is
warning snowmobilers and ice anglers in northwestern Wisconsin to
watch out for dangerous patches of open water on lakes.

The DNR says more than two dozen lakes across Barron, Polk,
Burnett and Washburn counties have aeration systems that will
operate during the winter. The systems add oxygen to the water to
prevent fish winterkill, but they can cause areas on the lakes to
remain free of ice.

The agency says open areas should be roped off with reflective
tape or reflectors, but people should still be careful.
