Wisconsin companies looking to increase international sales of their products can access federal funds to cover a portion of their marketing costs. Companies can apply for 2011 funding through the Branded Program, a cost reimbursement program of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).

The program funds are administered by the United States Livestock Genetics Export (USLGE) and the Food Export Association of the Midwest. Thirty companies participated in the USLGE and Food Export Branded Program in 2009, accessing over $1 million in funding for international marketing expenses. Participating companies reported an increase in export sales of $11 million as a result of their involvement in the Branded Program.

“I encourage food and feed manufacturers, private breeders, and cooperatives to take advantage of this exciting opportunity and apply for funds from the Branded Program,” said Lisa Stout, an agricultural marketing consultant for the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade, and Consumer Protection. “Wisconsin products are in demand worldwide, and these funds can build international sales for our Wisconsin companies and strengthen our state's economy.”

Eligible products include, but are not limited to, livestock, genetics, processed and value-added foods, animal feeds, ingredients, and meat products.   Funds will assist small and medium-sized exporters gain entry to international markets and establish identity of their brand-name products.

Approved activities eligible for a reimbursement of up to fifty percent include:
  • International advertising
  • Development, translation, and distribution of promotional materials
  • Participation in foreign trade shows and exhibitions
  • In-store demonstrations
  • Freight for samples

“Participants leverage their own money with matching funds from the Branded Program to develop international markets,” Stout explained.  “The Branded Program funds have shown positive results with increase of sales.”

Applications will be evaluated on several factors such as anticipated economic impact, years of exporting experience, and viability of marketing plans.  The applications are now being accepted and will continue throughout 2011 pending continued availability of funds.

Additional information can be found at www.brandedprogram.org. For questions about qualifications, marketing plans, and the application process, please contact Stout at 608-224-5126.
