Farm News: States Hog Population Drops Again

Wisconsin’s hog and pig inventory was 340,000 head on December 1, 2010, down 10,000 head from December 1, 2009.

Breeding hog inventory, at 45,000, was down 5,000. Market hog numbers also declined 5,000 head from last year to 295,000 head.
U.S. inventory of all hogs and pigs on December 1, 2010 was 64.3 million head. This was down 1 percent from December 1, 2009, and down 2 percent from September 1, 2010. Breeding inventory, at 5.78 million head, was down 1 percent from last year but up slightly from the previous quarter. Market hog inventory, at 58.5 million head, was down 1 percent from last year and down 2 percent from last quarter.
Wisconsin’s annual pig crop, December 2009-November 2010, was 786,000 head, a 7 percent decrease from the previous year. Sows farrowing during the same period to-taled 86,000 head, down 8 percent. Pigs per litter averaged 9.14, compared to 9.05.
