Farm News: Towns And Counties Want To LearncommentsPosted: 12.29.2010
Community leaders, elected officials, dairy and livestock producers, conservation officials and citizens interested in growing green and vibrant communities are invited to attend an Agriculture Community Engagement (ACE) education seminar on Thursday, Feb. 24, at the Kalahari Resort in Wisconsin Dells, Wis. The seminar will start at 8:45 a.m. and conclude at 3:30 p.m. It is jointly sponsored by the Wisconsin Counties Association, Wisconsin Towns Association and Professional Dairy Producers of Wisconsin (PDPW).
“ACE educational events such as this one provide the opportunity for individuals to openly dialogue and learn about agricultural issues important to our communities,” says Shelly Mayer, PDPW Executive Director. “Agriculture touches so much of community life, from the economic to environmental, from the scenery to the quality of life. ACE allows agriculture and local communities to better understand each other so we can co-exist and thrive.”
Centered on the theme, “Finding Environmental & Community Harmony,” the Feb. 24 seminar will include four presentations relevant to communities and the dairy industry:
Dennis Frame, Discovery Farm co-director, will talk about the Karst Report and its environmental findings.
Attorney Eric Straub will address immigration and its relevance to the dairy industry and local employment issues.
Kevin Erb, UW-Extension specialist, will lead a discussion on building and protecting Wisconsin roads, including an update on a recent Minnesota study. The discussion will focus on how the dairy industry can cooperate for better roads through commonsense approaches that deliver a win-win for everyone.
Dairy producers Jim Kruger of So-Fine Bovines in Marquette County and Linda Hodorff of Second-Look Holsteins in Fond du Lac County will deliver the final presentation and share “Thoughts from the Farm,” talking about dairy challenges and concerns relevant to local officials.
“Wisconsin dairy farms are changing, and it’s important that we all be in the loop about these changes and challenges,” says Rick Stadelman, Executive Director of the Wisconsin Towns Association. “Environmental and community harmony is important to all. When we stay current on the issues facing our industry and work together for a common solution, everyone benefits.”
The event’s $40 registration cost covers participation in the seminar as well as lunch and all workshop materials. To reserve your space at the Feb. 24 ACE seminar, contact the Wisconsin Towns Association at (715) 526-3157.
Professional Dairy Producers of Wisconsin is a dairy-producer founded organization that provides educational programs and services to fellow dairy producers. PDPW’s mission is “to share ideas, solutions, resources, and experiences that help dairy producers succeed.”
