Farm News: Nearly $13,000 In Holstein ScholarshipscommentsPosted: 12.29.2010 The Wisconsin Holstein Association will be awarding nearly $13,000 in scholarships to 13 of its best and brightest youth. Awards will be given to college students studying agriculture and related fields at the annual Junior Holstein Convention to be held in Stevens Point, Wis. January 8-10, 2011. Mitch Kappelman of Two Rivers, Wis., will receive the Elroy Borgwardt Memorial Scholarship. This scholarship is given in memory of Elroy, a long-time Holstein Breeder from Valders, Wis., who was past president of the Association and a National Holstein director. It is awarded to a student enrolled in an agriculture-related post high school education. Mitch is the 19-year-old son of Peter and Shellie and is a sophomore at the University of Wisconsin-Madison majoring in Dairy Science with a business emphasis.
Dustin Huser of Vesper, Wis., will receive the Gordon Berg Memorial Scholarship. Gordon was also a long-time Wisconsin Holstein member and breeder from Brownsville, Wis. This scholarship is given to a student enrolled in a technical college, two-year, or short course agriculture program. Dustin is the 19-year-old son of Dave and Adele and is in his second year of study at in the Farm Operations Program at Mid-State Technical College of Marshfield, Wis.
A scholarship founded in 2010 will be given in memory of Doris Morris. Doris, her husband, Arden, along with Arden’s brother, Maldwyn, and his wife, Inez, owned and operated Arwyn Farms in Waukesha County for over 40 years. This year’s recipient of the Doris Morris Memorial Scholarship is Kelly Lee of Johnson Creek, Wis. Kelly is the 20-year-old daughter of Terry Lee and Grant and Katie DeBruin and is in her second year at Cornell University studying Animal Science.
A new scholarship developed for 2011 is the Brad Fust Memorial Scholarship. Brad was an enthusiastic member of the Junior Holstein Association from Wausau, Wis., and this scholarship was established by Brad’s parents, Brian and Wendy Fust, with the sale of one of Brad’s heifers. Lee Slattery, Rudolph, Wis., will receive the first-ever scholarship in Brad’s name. Lee is the 21-year-old son of Patrick and Carol Slattery and is in his senior year pursuing a degree in Agriculture and Applied Economics from UW-Madison.
There are eight recipients of four-year degree program scholarships from Wisconsin Holstein. The first is Hillary Hartley of Soldiers Grove, Wis.; Hillary is the 20-year-old daughter of Dean and Donna Hartley and attends UW-LaCrosse. Hillary serves as the Wisconsin Holstein Princess.
