An E. coli outbreak at a Wausau butcher shop
has apparently been contained.
The Marathon County Health Department cleared Zillman Meat
Market on Tuesday to resume making sausage and other smoked
products.
Department spokeswoman Judy Burrows says there have been no
additional reports of illness since the problem was reported last
week.
The department said four people got sick after eating wild game
processed at the market. One was briefly hospitalized.
Burrows tells the Wausau Daily Herald that the shop's staff
scrubbed down all surfaces with detergent and sanitizers.
The department's investigation focused on ready-to-eat smoked
products processed between Sept. 30 and Nov. 13. The health
department still advises customers not to eat those products.
Burrows says the market's fresh meat remains safe if it's cooked
properly.
