Farm News: Seasonal Slump In Dairy Starts

It’s not really a surprise to Wisconsin’s dairy farmers – but it’s not welcome either. The seasonal slide in milk prices has begun according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

According to state officials - Wisconsin dairy farmers received an average price of $18.00 per hundredweight (cwt.) for their milk in November or about $1.54 per gallon at the farm gate. That is up $2.20 from November 2009 – but the good news ends there.

Now Wisconsin officials are predicting that the December 2010 price will decrease $1.40 to $16.60 per cwt.

Wisconsin’s milk price will actually trail the expected U.S. milk price. Projections now are for December milk value to be around $16.80 per cwt., $1.10 lower than last month, but 20 cents more than Wisconsin’s price.

All 23 of the major milk producing states are expecting their December price to be lower than November’s price. California and Idaho are expecting the lowest price in the country, at $14.60 per cwt.
