Farm News: More Deer Studies Coming Up

State wildlife officials will be trapping
dozens of deer as part of a four-year study to estimate Wisconsin's
deer population.

The Department of Natural Resources says the deer will be
captured this week. The trapping will occur within a 30-mile radius
of the Navarino Wildlife Area in Shawano County.

Officials will use a low-flying helicopter to isolate deer, and
then use a net gun to capture the animal. The deer will be
airlifted to a processing center, where some will be given radio
collars and others will be given ear tags.

The DNR hopes to learn more about deer survival rates, as well
as to understand how and when they die.

DNR wildlife biologist Jeff Pritzl tells WBAY-TV the trapping
process should take four to five days.
