Volatile markets for fertilizer, milk and grain make “risk management” a buzz word over coffee cups these days and finding a path through the confusing maze of commodity futures, hedging and crop input contracts can be daunting for the uninitiated. “Making a profit on a farm today involves a whole lot more than just bringing the crop to the elevator,” said Doug Cropp, Grain Division Manager for Landmark Services Cooperative. “That is why we have expanded our traditional winter grain meetings to include agronomic, energy, milk marketing and finance sessions. We wanted to offer our growers more information so they can stay profitable for the long-term.”
Landmark’s upcoming Farm Risk Management Workshops offer something for everyone. Headlining the morning sessions will be Mike North and Kevin Reisberg. Mike North, a Senior Hedge Consultant for First Capitol Ag will start the workshops off with an overview of where world fertilizer, grain and energy prices have been and may be heading soon. Following Mike, Kevin Reisburg of RJ O’Brien Commodity Brokerage will speak on the world of futures grain contracts and how to make them work in today’s volatile marketplace. Following lunch, producers will have the opportunity to take part in break-out sessions that will allow a small group, hands-on approach to individual topics of their choosing. Each break-out will last 30 minutes and producers will be able to choose 4 of 6 including:
