Farm News: Wisconsin Cranberry Crop Still Tops

comments

Posted: 01.26.2011

Even though the weather took a toll on
Wisconsin's cranberry crop last year, the state still produced its
second-highest output ever.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture says Wisconsin produced 3.96
million barrels of the tart fruit in 2010.

The increase of 10,000 barrels from 2009 amounts to growth of
only a fraction of a percentage point. Still, that was good news
considering national production was down 2 percent to 6.8 million
barrels.

Wisconsin accounted for 58 percent of the U.S. total.
Wisconsin's 2010 growing season started with a
warmer-than-average April, followed by a summer full of hot and
humid days. Then there were heavy rains that led to an
overabundance of water.

Some farmers reported that the excessive moisture led to rot.
