A farm couple from southeast Wisconsin is advancing to national competition as the 2011 Wisconsin Outstanding Young Farmer Award winners.

Saturday evening in Eau Claire, Brian and Renee Schaal of Burlington were named winners of the annual event - designed to highlight the states young farm and agribusiness leaders.  The Schaal's milk 225 cows on their third generation farm.  The manage about 425 acres in the families limited liability partnership.  The Schaals have two small children, and said they use genomic info to improve their herd.

The Schaals also believe in technology for their field crops.  They routinely use triple stack corn hybrids to reduce chemical inputs and have started using grid mapping for soil testing to better manage nutrients.  They also inject their manure to avoid run-off.

The couple was sponsored by the Watertown Area OYF, Racine County Dairy Promotion and Racine County Farm Bureau.

The JCI Wisconsin Jaycees 58th Outstanding Young Farmer (OYF) Awards Weekend was hosted by the Prairie du Chein Jaycees.  The Awards Weekend committee included: Harold and Cindy Matton, Ken and Ann Reckelberg, Bob Bosold, Mahlon Peterson, Jerry Clark of UWEX, and Daphne Holterman.

1st Runners-up honors went to Ryan & Sarah Radecki, Pulaski (Shawano County), who milk 180 cows and operate 530 acres.

2nd Runners-up were Ben & Nicki Peterson, Grantsburg (Burnett County) who operate Four Cubs Farm. They milk 525 cows and run 1,500 acres. They also took second place in the Speak Up for Agriculture.

Patty and Gary Edelburg, Scandinavia (Portage County) were named the "Speak up for Agriculture winners".

Ryan & Michelle Keller, Richland Center, were the 2010 OYF state winners and national finalists.  (See additional details on our other farm news page) The Kellers will represent Wisconsin at the 55th OYF Awards Congress, in February in Louisville, KY.  It's already been announced that the Keller's have made it into the top 10 in the national competition.
