The Wisconsin Pork Association (WPA) continues its work in rewarding young people pursuing college educations focused on agriculture.  During their annual meeting in Wisconsin Dells, the group presented their annual scholarships.
The Whitmore Memorial Scholarship was established as a legacy to the late Rex Whitmore, a master statesman and communicator who served as the first executive director of the Wisconsin Pork Association.

The $500 scholarship was awarded to John Nelson, a student at UW-River Falls, son of James and Cheryl Nelson of Galesville.  Nelson is a Junior at UW-River Falls, where he is majoring in ag education and minoring in animal science. He has been an active member of the Block and Bridle Club, Agricultural Education Society, and participated in the National Collegiate Meat Animal Evaluation Contest.

Nelson is serving as the current student swine manager at the university farm, where his duties include choosing replacement females, sire selection, herd health, and record keeping. John says that his “ultimate career goal is to become an agriculture teacher and swine producer, supporting agriculture and the swine industry because that is where my passion lies.”

Rebecca Keel a UW-Madison student from Juneau received a $250 check. Keel is a Junior at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and is majoring in Animal Science. On campus, she has been active in the Association of Women in Agriculture, Saddle and Sirloin, is an inducted member in the National Society of Leadership and Success, and has conducted research at the University Swine Research Unit. She has a passion for raising and showing hogs at local, state, and national shows. Upon graduation, she would like to pursue her education by getting a masters in animal or meat science, and she plans to continue to raise productive purebred Yorkshires and crossbred pigs for shows and other young exhibitors.

The money didn't end there!  The Wisconsin Pork Association also rewarded ambitious high school students too.

The top scholarship winner was Collin Keel, son of Steve and Laurie Keel, Juneau - was awarded $500. Collin plans to attend Black Hawk College and would like to get a degree in ag business and finance, and also hopes to take some classes in swine production and genetics. He would like to become an ag loan officer, and to own and operate a successful boar stud service. Before and after school, you can find Collin taking care of his Duroc and crossbred sows, and he is always looking forward to the birth of his next litters.

Four additional high school students received $100.  That list included: TJ Doherty, son of Shawn and Nancy Doherty, Johnson Creek; Cody Kleven, son of Randy and Linda Kleven, Janesville; Erica Langholff, daughter of Darin and Kim Langholff, Wisconsin Rapids; and Kelly Vierck, daughter of Steve and Dawn Vierck, Juneau.
