It's not controversy - just Packermania that postponed some of the Wisconsin Farmers Union board business originally planned for their annual meeting in Madison.

The annual meeting drew over 220 members from around the state to Madison for policy approval and special guests - but it adjourned a little early to allow members to return home for the Super Bowl on Sunday that featured the Green Bay Packers.  "There's a little something special going on Sunday that the board decided needed attention before officer elections,"  according to WFU Executive Director, Scott Schultz.

Saturday the group heard greetings and updates from special guests:  Congresswoman Tammy Baldwin; State Representative, Lee Nerison; State Senator, Dan Kapanke; Wisconsin Senator, Herb Kohl; NFU President, Roger Johnson; and WI Deputy Ag Secretary, Jeff Lyon

There were plenty of awards presented during the 80th annual Wisconsin Farmers Union business session.  Aside from greetings from guests like - members that have been strong supporters of the organization were recognized.

Friends of the Family Farmer Awards went to Former U.S. Representative, David Obey and Former U.S. Senator, Russ Feingold.

Young people in the organization were also highlighted with the WFU Torchbearer Awards.  The program's been in place since the 1930's .  The 2010 Torcherbearers were:
Courtney Mahr - Chippewa County
Tori Bode - Marathon County
Sara Cotter - Dane County
Hannah Roberg - Dane County
Brittany Johnson - Dane County
Greg Ponick - Chippewa County
and Kalvin Weaver

The WFU "Builders" awards were presented to members that have given both time and money in building the organization.  Myrna Fauska from the LaCrosse/Monroe chapter along with Bill Leuder from the Dodge county chapter. Larry Swalheim of Cottage Grove was also presented the 2011 Builder's Award.

In a conversation with Pam Jahnke Sunday just before the game - Schultz said there really wasn't any business left to transact - except to decide if current president, Darin Von Ruden, will be allowed to serve a second term.  Von Ruden technically has "termed out" as a board of directors member - but the executive board could still approve him as president.  Schultz tells Jahnke they'll be holding a special conference call meeting this Friday to determine the final outcome.
