Farm News: Water Clarity Helps Sturgeon Season

State fisheries officials say water clarity on the Lake Winnebago system is improving as Wisconsin's sturgeon spearing season looms.

Department of Natural Resources officials say two weeks ago the
water clarity was about 12 feet. That has since improved to 13 feet
to all the way to the bottom.

Increased clarity makes it easier for spearers to see the
sturgeon. But more snow has fallen over the last couple weeks. That means
travel on the ice will be more difficult.

Fishing clubs have been out plowing roads and paths to help spearers reach different areas.
Still, people who plan to move around from day to day will need a four-wheel drive with a high clearance. An attached plow wouldn't be a bad idea, either.

The season opens on Saturday.
