Farm News: Kids - Win With Aquaculture

comments

Posted: 02.15.2011

With all the financial challenges that people are facing - maybe your kids would like to earn a little pocket cash and learn something more about Wisconsin's aquaculture industry.

The Wisconsin Aquaculture Association (WAA) in conjunction with the Northern Aquaculture Demonstration Facility (NADF) and the University of Wisconsin Extension (UW-EX) is sponsoring the fourth annual Aquaculture Poster Contest. The posters will be displayed and judged at the Wisconsin Aquaculture Conference on March 11 in Waukesha, Wisconsin. Winning posters will not only win cash prizes, but they'll also be on display for one year at NADF in Red Cliff, Wisconsin and appear in the WAA newsletter, The Creel

Ron Johnson, Aquaculture Outreach Specialist for the UWSP Northern Aquaculture Demonstration Facility, says that winners will be selected on the basis of originality, artistic appeal and understanding of Wisconsin Aquaculture. Johnson says kids should try and incorporate the theme:  "Aquaculture is Water Dependent".  He says the theme, which is the same theme for the 2011 Wisconsin Aquaculture Conference, emphasizes that water is vital to the future of Wisconsin Aquaculture.  Aquaculture uses, but does not consume, water – Johnson says - incorporating best management practices to be environmentally sound.

Prizes will be awarded to the first three places: $100 first, $50 second, $25 third.

The completion deadline for all posters is Friday, March 4th.  There are some additional requirements that students and schools should be aware of.  For complete application details, and information on where to send the completed posters - contact Ron Johnson, Aquaculture Outreach Specialist, 715-779-3189 or ron.johnson@uwsp.edu
