Farm News: WI Raw Milk Association Formed

A group "dedicated to uphold the right of consumers to obtain raw milk and raw milk products" has been formed in Wisconsin.

The Wisconsin Raw Milk Association - with a mailing address in New Holstein - is committed to changing the raw milk laws of Wisconsin.  According to their press release - WRMA is presently working to pass a law legalizing the sale of raw milk and raw milk products.  To date - Wisconsin law only allows the on-farm sale of raw milk on an incidental basis. Wisconsin state regulation defines "incidental" as not being in the "regular course of business."

The proposed legislation WRMA supports would legalize the on-farm sale of raw milk and raw milk products by those holding a Grade A permit and by those unlicensed dairy farms that milk fewer than twenty cows.

According to WRMA, the group formed through informal conversations and online chats.  Gradually members starting meeting one another at various hearings at the WI Department of Agriculture and across the state.  Individuals most involved in this issue decided to band together and hired a lobbyist to help them draft legislation to change the current raw milk laws.

The WRMA website is also soliciting donations.  They say, "100 percent of the money will be used to pay for legal fees, lobbying and web presence."
