Honey production from producers with 5 or more colonies in Wisconsin totaled 4.35 million pounds in 2010, an increase of 15 percent from 2009. The number of honey producing colo-nies in the state increased from 63,000 colonies in 2009 to 68,000 colonies in 2010. This number does not include those producers with less than 5 colonies or those who did not har-vest honey. Yield per colony averaged 64 pounds, an increase of 4 pounds per colony from the previous year. Colonies which produced honey in more than one State were counted in each State where the honey was produced. Wisconsin’s rank in honey production for 2010 was eighth, three spots above last year.

On December 15, 2010, producer honey stocks in Wisconsin were 1.65 million pounds, an increase of 4 percent from 2009. Wisconsin’s 2010 honey crop was valued at $7.27 million, 22 percent above last year’s $5.97 million. The average price for a pound of honey in Wisconsin was $1.67, up 9 cents from the previous year. State level honey prices reflect the portions of honey sold through retail, co-op, and private channels.

National honey production in 2010 was 176 million pounds, up 20 percent from 2009. There were 2.687 million honey produc-ing colonies in the U.S., up 7 percent from last year. The aver-age yield increased 12 percent, to 65.5 pounds per colony. On December 15, 2010 honey producers held 45.3 million pounds in stock, up 21 percent from a year earlier.

Honey prices in the U.S. reached a record high for the third straight year, at $1.60 per pound in 2010. This is up 13 cents from the previous year. Prices are based on retail sales by pro-ducers and sales to private processors and cooperatives.
