(Remember - the Wisconsin Aquaculture Association's annual meeting is March 11-12)

Wisconsin aquaculture industry – specifically trout – had a nasty 2010.

According to the Wisconsin Ag Statistical Service, the states trout producers reported a $167,000 drop in sales in 2010.

Trout-for-sale producers lost 505,000 trout weighing 82,000 pounds to various causes during 2010. The number of trout lost was 14,000 fewer than 2009 – and the weight of the trout lost was down 6,000 pounds.

In addition to sales, trout, valued at $2.23 million, were distributed for restoration or conservation uses.
Overall sales of trout are broken down by size.

Sales of trout that were at least 12 inches long totaled $1.47 million, a 4 percent decrease in value from 2009. The number of trout sold at 12 inches or longer was 520,000. Live weight of trout sold in this size category was 482,000 pounds. Compared to a year earlier, trout were slightly smaller in 2010, and 40,000 more pounds were sold. Producers received an average of $3.04 per pound, down 27 cents from 2009.

The value of trout sold in the 6 to 12 inch range, at $129,000, fell $125,000 from 2009. The number of fish sold in the size range, at 85,000, dropped 75,000 from the previous year. The average price was $3.91 per pound, 1 cent above a year earlier.

Sales of 1 to 6 inch trout totaled $30,000, up $12,000 from 2009. There were 110,000 trout sold, 20,000 more than a year earlier. Total pounds sold, at 6,000, increased by 1,000 pounds. The price for fish in the 1 to 6 inch category, at $272 per 1,000 fish, increased by $70.

In Wisconsin, the 1 to 6 inch size was the most common type distributed for conservation or restoration purposes, at 3.11 mil-lion trout. The number of 6 to 12 inch trout distributed was 1.83 million, and 10,000 of the 12 inch or longer trout were distributed.
