Farm News: Producers First And Local Food ConnectioncommentsPosted: 03.09.2011
The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) invites local food producers to apply now for Producers First. The purpose of this funding is to connect producers with an expert consultant to address the farm operation’s needs to increase capacity, efficiency, and sales.
Examples of provided assistance can include: accounting, business planning, food safety, grant writing assistance, legal services, market development, packaging and label development, and whole farm planning. Assistance is provided to local food producers selling the majority of their products regionally.
Producers First applications are accepted continuously and reviewed the first week of each month. Funded projects generally begin within a month of review. Producers First will provide up to $3,000 for one-on-one technical assistance. Participants are required to provide a minimum 10 percent cost-share to receive the funding.

Potential Producers First applicants are invited, but not required, to attend a workshop at Michael Fields Agricultural Institute in East Troy on Friday, March 18, 2011 to participate in a panel discussion with Producers First recipients and meet with DATCP staff.
