Wisconsin Agriculture Secretary, Ben Brancel, is keeping a close eye on developments in Japan.

“During this disastrous time in Japan, our agency’s biggest concern is the well-being of the Japanese people. We continue to reach out to our business partners and friends in Japan to determine the condition of their communities and immediate resources needed. As relief efforts begin, we remind people that if they choose to donate, contribute to trustworthy entities such as the American Red Cross, UNICEF, World Vision, or other established charitable organizations to avoid scams and ensure donations are used as intended,"  Brancel said.

He stressed that the department's International Trade Team will continue to maintain the states business relations with Japan. Japan was Wisconsin’s third largest agricultural export market in 2010 with a value of $97 million. Wisconsin’s major agricultural exports to Japan include dairy, eggs, honey, and prepared meats and fish.

Brancel says it's too soon to assess the overall impact the disaster will have on the states trade with Japan. He said he does expect some disruption in the market because of significant damage to Japan’s infrastructure.  Japan relies heavily on agricultural imports, importing 60% of its food.”

DATCP’s International Trade Team offers business counseling, education, and market research for companies interested in entering the international market or growing their international business. In 2010, Wisconsin agricultural exports hit a record high value of $2.4 billion, a 36-percent growth over 2009.
