State officials have frozen enrollment and
plan to raise premiums for the BadgerCare Basic program.
State Department of Health Services Secretary Dennis Smith says
expenditures have outpaced premium revenues by nearly $2 million in
the program's first nine months.

The BadgerCare Basic started enrollment last June for low-income
adults with no dependent children. It was to help more than 50,000
people on the BadgerCare waiting list.

Department officials say once all claims are submitted, they are
expecting an estimated deficit of $5.7 million. The enrollment was frozen effective Friday. The program was to operate through 2013.

Smith says the state will maintain coverage for those on the
program and help new applicants find alternative coverage.

Beginning for May, premiums will go from $130 a month to $200
.
