Demolition of the former Badger Middle School on the new Resilience Research Center project site will begin this Wednesday, March 30th.   The project, led by the Center for Resilient Cities, will transform 4-acres on the south side of Madison into an innovative hub for learning and research.

Tom Dunbar, Executive Director of the Center for Resilient Cities, tells Pam Jahnke that this innovative school is not just about students - but their parents too.  "We want this facility to teach families where their food comes from and how to prepare and preserve it too."

The school is expected to welcome 40 students this August for it's first class.  Dunbar tells Jahnke that the school schedule will be a little different then traditional calendars because it does focus on agriculture.  "Students have to be in class when things are growing to learn,"  he says.

Tentatively scheduled for completion this fall, construction of the 50,000 square foot development will include a neighborhood center, mixed-use businesses, an energy services center, intensive urban agriculture, and the new Badger Rock Middle School: a project-based, charter school where up to 150 students will explore food, energy, and water use.

All of the activities at the Resilience Research Center will be studied and evaluated by public and private research partners and faculty at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and Edgewood College as potential strategies for helping communities manage social, environmental, and economic stressors.

Additional support and program partners for the project include Growing Power, MG&E, Community Action Coalition, Badger Rock Middle School, Community Groundworks, First Supply and Food Fight, Inc.
