The University of Wisconsin-Madison’s Association of Women in Agriculture (AWA) presented more than $8,000 in scholarships to 14 student members for the 2010-2011 school year.

Six members received AWA scholarships, three of which were the AWA House Scholarship provided to members living in the organization’s house.  These scholarships were made possible through the generous support of AWA alumni and friends. The AWA scholarship recipients included Paula Courtney, a junior from Mukwonago, majoring in dairy science; Mackenzie Fochs, a junior from Mosinee, majoring in horticulture and life sciences communication; Sonia Gelsinger, a sophomore from Robesonia, Pa.; Jessica Milatz, a junior from Burlington, majoring in agricultural business management; Ashley Nimtz, a junior from Monticello, majoring in dairy science, agronomy and life sciences communication; and Shannon Sattler, a sophomore from Hartland, majoring in genetics.

Christine McFarland and Amanda Veum received the AWA Larry Satter Memorial Scholarships. McFarland is a sophomore from Watertown, majoring in dairy science and life sciences communication, and Veum is a junior from Evansville, majoring in animal science and life sciences communication. Satter, a world-renowned dairy scientist, served as AWA’s long-time campus adviser.

Lauren Holterman, a sophomore from Watertown, majoring in food science and life sciences communication, was awarded the AWA Delma Woodburn Memorial Scholarship. Woodburn, who graduated from UW-Madison in 1921 with a degree in economics and later attended UW’s Farm and Industry Short Course, was the wife of UW engineering professor, James Woodburn. Woodburn shared a keen interest in women’s success in agriculture and provided both encouragement and financial resources to AWA.

Carissa Levash, a junior from Brillion, majoring in dairy science, received the AWA David Dickson Memorial Scholarship. Known around the world for his dairy cattle evaluation and coaching skills, Dickson made significant financial contributions to AWA and mentored many members.

Chelsea Brander, a junior from Spring Green, majoring in dairy science and life sciences communication; Danielle Brown, a junior from Dodgeville, majoring in dairy science and life sciences communication; Connie Eibergen, a junior from Granton, majoring in life sciences communication; and Claire Ohman, a junior from Glenbeulah, majoring in dairy science; received scholarships from the Daughters of Demeter, a charitable organization made up of College of Agricultural and Life Sciences (CALS) faculty members’ spouses. With close to 150 members, they contribute more than $10,000 annually toward CALS scholarships
