Farm News: Is Your Farm Ready For OSHA?commentsPosted: 03.31.2011
If you hire employees to work on your farm, the Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Act of 1970, applies to your operation. Do you farm with 11 or more non-family member employees? If so, there may be additional requirements for Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) compliance. Are you looking for ways to improve your Worker Compensation Insurance experiences and reducing your costs? Not sure where to start? Developing an employee safety program will help you address occupational safety and health issues on your farm.
How to Start an Employee Safety Program for Your Farm will be offered on Friday, April 8 at the Leon Community Center (Leon School) 20638 Jameson Rd, Sparta, WI. Registration will begin at 12:45 p.m. with the presentations going from 1:00 pm until 3:00 pm. Please contact the Monroe County Extension Office to pre-register for this workshop. There is no charge for this workshop.
Cheryl Skjolaas, UW Extension Agricultural Safety Specialist will discuss:
• OSHA Agricultural standards (1928) and how they apply to your operation
• OSHA General Industry Standards (1910) and how they apply to agriculture
• General Duty Clause and how it applies to confined spaces, such as manure storage and handling systems, and skidsteer operation.
• How to assess hazards on your farm as related to jobs preformed by employees
• Training employees to comply with standards and resources available for training
• Documentation requirements and posting of information
Again, pre-registration is appreciated and can be done by calling the Monroe County UW-Extension office at 608-269-8722. This workshop is intended for owners and dairy managers to learn more about how they can insure that they are applying OSHA requirements to their operation.
