Farm News: Outstanding Bull Sale At PlattevillecommentsPosted: 04.04.2011 The stronger beef market was evident in the prices bid for bulls at the 54th annual Wisconsin Beef Improvement Association's Performance Tested Bull Sale on Saturday. John Freitag, with WBIA, said that buyers took animals back to farms in Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa and Illinois. He said in the past, many bulls would have sold to farms as far away as Maryland and Montana - but with more beef herds holding their own private sales, some of that attention has shifted.
The sale started off with a bang when an angus heifer that had been donated by Herman and Chris Wolters of Cuba City. The heifer was to be auctioned - with all proceeds to benefit the proposed new beef facility for the UW-Platteville farm. The heifer was purchased by Biddick, Inc. and Brian Nodolf of Livingston for $4,200.
The rest of the sale didn't disappoint either. According to Freitag, the Angus bulls averaged $2,826 a piece. The Simmental came in with an average of $3,025 on 10 animals, and the 9 Red Angus that sold brought an average of $2,385. Hermann and Christine Wolters, Wolters Angus Farm, Cuba City, WI consigned the top three selling Angus bulls for the day. A Majesty 802 son, sold for $4,500 to Allan Haytcher, Monmouth, IA. Another Majesty 802 son, sold for $4,200 going to Brett Broadwater, Preston, MN. Bill Giesemann, LaMotte, IApaid $4,100 for the third high selling bull, a GAR Concrete son.
All three of the top Simmental bulls stayed in Wisconsin. Bob and Mary Roenneburg, Vulture Hollow Simmentals, Blue Mounds, consigned the top three selling Simmental Bulls. The top bull they consigned when to Larry Mumm, Bloomington, for $3900. Rob Pulvermacher, Lone Rock, paid $3,200 for a SS Ebony’s Grandmaster son, while Georg Kieler, Platteville, paid $3,200 for a Nichol’s Legacy G151 Son.
SMBA Stock Farm from Hayward consigned the high selling Red Angus bull. Shuman Cattle Company, Hayward, bought it for $3,500. Scott LaBarge from Platteville took home the next top Red Angus for $3,200 - an animal consigned by the UW-Platteville farm. Finally, the third top Red Angus was on its way to Mike Schumacher's farm in Johnson Creek.
