Farm News: A High School Junior - Already A Business Woman

For the first time, Wisconsin has an "Entreprenauer of the Year" and it shouldn't surprise you that the businesswoman is focused on the dairy industry.

Candace Wetter, a junior at Fennimore High School and active member of the Fennimore FFA Chapter, was named an "Entrepreneur of the Year" through a Department of Public Instruction and Junior Achievement program.

Wetter’s business began when she was 13 years old and her family moved to a small farm outside of Stitzer, Wis., located in Grant County. Candace idn't have any agricultural experience until that time - but she knew she wanted to work with animals.  So, this go-getter started helping out at a neighbors dairy.  Soon, her skill level advanced enough so she was a part-time assistant calf manager and relief milker at the local dairy farm.  That's when she got the idea of forming her own business..

Today Wetter’s business, "Edge of Town Dairy", includes three segments – custom-raising heifers, raising heifers for a private buyer and raising dairy bulls and heifers of her own. Off the farm, she has exhibited heifers locally and nationally through her 4-H and FFA dairy projects.

“The three marketing programs have very different responsibilities; the calves aren’t raised the same way. Custom raising requires a lot of flexibility and commitment,” said Wetter. She thanked Jake Klas, owner and operator of Fennimore Livestock Exchange, and Brenda and Becky Martin and Bryan Everson, owners of Glenmar-Dale Farms, for their encouragement and support of her business venture.

“Congratulations to Candace Wetter for putting her education into action,” said State Superintendent Tony Evers. “She is a fine example of how the planning and organizational skills young people learn in school can translate into a successful business and a very hopeful future.”

“Junior Achievement is proud to be a sponsor of this annual award,” said Tim Greinert, president of Junior Achievement of Wisconsin. “Through experiential programs delivered by volunteers, we nurture, inspire, and empower kids to pursue their dreams and own their financial futures. Candace is an example and an inspiration for us all.”

Wetter’s short-term business goal is to rebuild a pole shed that collapsed in a wind storm so she can increase the number of calves that she custom raises. Her future plans include expansion of the Edge of Town Dairy to provide more income and financial stability. She hopes to attend a four- year university within commuting distance of her home, allowing her to continue operating her calf-raising business.

“We salute Candace Wetter for her hard work, impressive business and her entrepreneurial spirit,” said Nicole Nelson, Executive Director of the Wisconsin FFA Foundation. “The FFA is committed to providing students with the knowledge and skills for a lifetime of career success. Candace exemplifies these qualities, and she is an excellent role model for entrepreneurs of all ages.”

Sponsored by Ernst & Young and co-presented by the Department of Public Instruction and Junior Achievement, the Young Entrepreneur of the Year award recognizes an individual between the ages of 8 and 18 who has turned a business idea into reality by applying the entrepreneurial spirit and demonstrating the knowledge and skills to operate a business enterprise. Wetter was recognized at the Wisconsin Business Hall of Fame and Induction Ceremony in Milwaukee and will also be recognized at the Ernst & Young Regional Award Banquet on June 15, also in Milwaukee.
