Farm News: MFA Helps Replace Research Dollars

Forage and alfalfa research in the Midwest got a financial shot in the arm - right around the time that grant monies started disappearing.

The Midwest Forage Association’s board of directors has decided to distribute a record $13,224 to forage-related research projects through the Midwest Forage Research Program (MFRP), honoring its commitment to devote more funding to research when available.
The MFRP started in 2007 in response to a member survey that showed forage-related research was the #1 priority among members. Now in its fifth year, the MFRP has distributed over $53,000 to research projects across Minnesota, North Dakota and Wisconsin - and continues to address issues deemed by its members as research priorities.

In December, MFA distributed its request for proposals (RFP) to forage agronomists and extension personnel at the land grant universities in Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wisconsin. The RFP called for the submission of one-year, forage related research proposals which specifically addressed one or more of MFA’s research priorities. MFA’s RFP attracted a total of nine proposals, requesting more than $33,000, which were evaluated by the board of directors and funded based upon a number of factors including industry need, cost effectiveness, and partnership. The board of directors distributed funding to six proposals:
On-Farm Evaluation of Alfalfa-Grass Mixtures
Paul Peterson, University of Minnesota
Fall Harvest Management of Alfalfa Cultivars with Different Fall Dormancy
Marisol Berti, North Dakota State University
Evaluating Twin-Row Corn Silage Production
Kevin Jarek, University of Wisconsin
Wisconsin Alfalfa Yield and Persistence Project
Mike Rankin, University of Wisconsin
Does the Use of a Foliar Fungicide Improve Alfalfa Forage Production
Paul Esker, University of Wisconsin
Alfalfa Fertilizer Study
Ted Bay, University of Wisconsin
MFA funds distributed to these projects represent either full funding or partial funding in cases where the researcher was able to leverage other matching funds to complete the project.
