Farm News: Milwaukee Kids Investigate AgriculturecommentsPosted: 04.19.2011
Wisconsin soybean growers are helping Milwaukee school children learn about the importance of agriculture by providing interactive lessons and field trips to area farms this spring.
With funding provided by the Wisconsin Soybean Marketing Board, elementary school principals in Milwaukee County were shipped a unique lesson plan demonstrating how agricultural products are part of everyday life.
The program, “A Day without Agriculture” was developed by Mariah Hadler and Tracey Novak, two state-certified teachers who also are Jefferson County, Wis., farmers. It includes a step-by-step lesson plan, everyday products such as sugar, pencils, paper and crayons plus a farm web activity to help students identify the plant or animal contained in those products.
As an incentive to teach the agricultural lesson in their classes, Milwaukee elementary school administrators can apply for $500 grants for field trips to one of several pre-qualified area farms. WSMB has earmarked up to $10,000 of farmer checkoff dollars for these school field-trip grants and will award them on a first-come-first-served basis.
Participating farms include Rob-n-Cin Farms, West Bend; Busy Barns Adventure Farms, Fort Atkinson; Cozy Nook Farms, Waukesha; Hinchley Dairy, Cambridge; Mighty Grand Dairy, Union Grove; Pleasant Valley Acres, Sullivan; Rosy Lane Holsteins, Watertown and Waldvogel’s Pumpkin Farm, Burnett. The mission of the Wisconsin Soybean Marketing Board is to maximize the profitability of Wisconsin's soybean producers by investing Wisconsin's soybean checkoff funds in targeted domestic and international research, promotion and communication initiatives.
