For southern Wisconsin gardeners on the hunt for heirloom plants - Janesville should be your destination this weekend.  The annual spring plant sale at the Rotary Botanical Gardens in Janesville will feature heirloom varieties of tomato plants!

An heirloom plant is a cultivar that was probably more commonly grown in earlier periods of human history, and isn't likely seen much today.  Some of these heirloom vegetables have kept their traits through open pollination, and fruits have been saved through grafts and cuttings.  The trend of gardeners looking for heirloom plants has gotten very popular in both the United States and Europe.

The Rotary Botanical Garden will have their sale this Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. at the Horticulture building - just follow the signs.  According to Janice Peterson, one of the attending gardeners, they'll have the following selection available.

50 varieties of heirloom and hybrid tomato plants
40 varieties of sweet and hot pepper plants
10 varieties basil plants
100 varieties of herbs (plants)
35 varieties of summer and winter squash seed
wide selection of garden perennials

"Compact Vegetable" selections that are perfect for small space or container gardening.  Pots, soil and expert help will be available so you can create your own vegetable container and bring it home!
