Farm News: Dairy Herd Numbers Drift Lower In AprilcommentsPosted: 05.23.2011
Wisconsin milk production totaled 2.20 billion pounds in April, down less than one percent from a year ago. Milk per cow averaged 1,735 pounds, down 10 pounds from last April. The number of milk cows in the state, at 1.27 million, was the same as last month, but up 5,000 from a year ago. As of May 1, 2011, Wisconsin had 12,167 licensed milk cow herds, down 92 from last month and down 603 from May 2010. Milk production in April in the 23 major states grew by 2 percent over the previous year. Milk per cow averaged 1,834 pounds, 9 pounds more than at this time last year. The number of milk cows, at 8.43 million, was 8,000 more than last month and 97,000 more than last year. Seventeen states had higher milk production when compared with last April, while 6 states had lower production. Produc-tion in Texas jumped 7 percent over last year, due to 16,000 more milk cows and a 60 pound per cow increase. Idaho had 19,000 more milk cows leading to a 5 percent gain in produc-tion. Minnesota and Wisconsin both had a decrease in the amount of milk per cow, which led to lower milk production when compared with the previous year. |
