A total of 27 businesses and organizations involved with Wisconsin’s agriculture, food and natural resource industry signed a letter in support of Agricultural Education/FFA. The letter was delivered to the Chair of the Assembly Agriculture Committee, Rep. Lee Nerison (R-Westby) requesting an informational hearing to discuss the status of Agricultural Education/FFA across the state.

The one-page letter states that, “As we continue to drive job creation, much of it within the agriculture, food and natural resource industry, we cannot ignore the prevailing skilled labor shortage within our state and nation.”

Agricultural Education/FFA programs provide a pipeline of skilled workers, states the letter. The rigorous and relevant curriculum and programs prepare students in complex systems such as biotechnology, natural resources, renewable energy, food science, marketing, business operations, manufacturing, production and other fields.

In the past several months, an estimated 15 percent of Wisconsin’s 250 Agricultural Education/FFA programs were notified that they faced reduction or complete elimination.

The letter concludes by stating that holding a hearing to discuss the potential reductions and eliminations "will allow us to bring together representatives from industry, education and government groups to proactivelydiscuss this topic and ensure that we develop the skilled workforce needed to support our economy."

“We are very encouraged by the industry’s outpouring of support in such a short time frame,” said Nicole Nelson, executive director of the Wisconsin FFA Foundation. “We look forward to working with Rep. Nerison to take the next steps in organizing this hearing so that we can be proactive and ensure the best future for our youth, our communities and our industry.”
