The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources has received a federal grant to fight an aggressive weed
this summer.

The federal Environmental Protection Agency gave the DNR a nearly $806,000 grant to pay for herbicide spraying against phragmites starting this August.

Phragmites can grow up to 20 feet tall and can crowd out native species and obscure waterfront views. It's found on the shores of Lake Michigan and the Bay of Green Bay. DNR Conservation biologist Heidi Springborn tells Wisconsin Public Radio that the weed migrated to this country in the hulls of lake-going vessels.

The DNR has hosted informational meetings in Marinette and Oconto last month and will host another Tuesday in Suamico and one Thursday in Sturgeon Bay.
