Farm News: 4-H Helps Girls Into Engineering

Wisconsin 4-H Youth Development will offer valuable hands-on experience with science, math, engineering and technology activities at an all-girls 4-H Gateway Academy in Sheboygan County this summer. All middle school-aged girls are invited to attend this weeklong day camp at Farnsworth Middle School in Sheboygan July 25-29.
The 4-H Gateway Academy is a joint venture of 4-H Youth Development, UW-Extension, the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) Education Foundation, the Kern Family Foundation and local school districts designed to foster interest in science and technology education and careers in youth. The Gateway Academy experience includes activities like robotics, rocketry, alternative energy and eco-friendly design. Each activity encourages creativity, critical thinking, teamwork and problem-solving skills in youth and introduces them to opportunities and careers in STEM fields.
According to Wisconsin 4-H STEM Specialist Joanna Skluzacek, while girls normally perform as well as boys in science and math coursework, very few young women pursue higher degrees and subsequent careers in STEM areas. “The 4-H Gateway Academy looks to provide young women with what they need to succeed in STEM: a supportive female environment that allows girls to build peer networks and a realistic view of the scope of careers available to scientists and engineers,” Skluzacek says.
The Sheboygan County 4-H Gateway Academy for girls will be held at Farnsworth Middle School. For more information on Wisconsin 4-H Gateway Academies visit http://www.uwex.edu/ces/4h/set/index.cfm.
