Farm News: Organic Agriculture Scaling Up

Posted: 06.22.2011

Wisconsin’s organic agriculture is scaling up according to the Midwest Organic & Sustainable Education Service (MOSES). They’re planning an organic field day on “Scaling Up Vegetable Production” Sunday, July 10, from 1pm – 4pm at Sandhill Organics, operated by Matt and Peg Sheaffer, in Grayslake, IL. The event will be held rain or shine.

The market for local, organic vegetables continues to grow, offering vegetable growers the opportunity to “scale-up,” and other types of farmers the opportunity to diversify their farms. New wholesale and institutional markets are giving farmers the opportunity to increase their income.

This field day will help farmers choose which crops, equipment and infrastructure are most cost effective and help them prepare their expansion plans. Matt and Peg Sheaffer have more than a decade of experience in growing vegetables. After starting out with little more than a pitchfork and a wheelbarrow, they now grow almost 20 acres of organic vegetables, herbs and flowers. The Sheaffers will share their experiences so others can learn from their successes and challenges. The planning, labor and equipment needed to produce high quality produce at this level will be demonstrated in the field and packing shed. Discussion will also cover wholesale packing and post harvest handling as well as requirements for organic certification.

Sandhill Organics at Prairie Crossing Organic Farm in Grayslake IL, is a nationally recognized conservation community. The field day is free and refreshments will be served.

Pre-registration is preferred. There are three easy options to register for MOSES field day events: online at www.mosesorganic.org, call (715) 778-5775 or email: angie@mosesorganic.org.
